Skcin are pleased to announce that Heanor Langley Infant School in Derbyshire have renewed their Sun Safe Schools Accreditation by ensuring their pupils are educated on the importance of sun safety and that a suitable sun safe environment and policy is put in place and reviewed annually.

“Children have responded very well- they automatically get their hats and apply suncream before going outside. On our trip to the zoo yesterday all children brought a hat and had suncream applied before they left home and many brought it with them to apply again at lunch time with all others using school's cream. Not many parents have sent the form back as yet, but we have had more bucket and legionnaire hats this year (last year we had more baseball caps) so they have responded to this change in policy well. The school's uniform supplier has already started providing legionnaire hats with the school logo and parents are buying these. It has also raised awareness for staff to look after their own safety in the sun, especially dinner staff who are outdoors in the hottest part of the day- again we are seeing more staff in hats and cream.

The Nest Nursery is now an Official Sun Safe Nursery!

Congratulations to The Nest Nursery for obtaining their Sun Safe Nursery Status & Award

“I think this is a wonderful idea, and couldn't wait to become a sun safe nursery. It is great to hear the children talking to each other when applying the sun cream about the benefits it provides for example, no burning, soft healthy skin. They really enjoy selecting their cream from the box, that independence of helping to apply and rub it it, being careful not to miss any patches. Also older children trying to explain to younger children. Really glad to be part of this.”

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS….
SUN SAFE SCHOOLS GOES GLOBAL!

Since it’s launch just a few years ago the success of the Sun Safe Schools national accreditation scheme has gone from strength to strength. With thousands of schools signed up to the scheme across the UK, teaching hundreds of thousand of children nationwide. The scheme is fast gaining recognition as the reality finally hits home that the key to reducing the soaring rates of skin cancer is through education, education, education.

There is no doubt that Sun Safe Schools is making an impact nationally, but Skcin are overwhelmed by the response we are receiving on a global scale. Currently over 100 schools from all over the world have also registered with the scheme and are using the comprehensive resources on offer to communicate sun safety within their school environment.

Twenty of these international participants are from the UV capital of the world, Australia. This is quite an honor considering they are the most sun savvy country on the planet - way ahead of the game in recognising the vital role that schools play in the prevention of skin cancer and a generation ahead in terms of seeing their efforts realised.

But it’s not just Australia, many countries across the globe with English speaking schools are finding us by the magnificent means of the world wide web and getting on-board, with over 30 schools in the USA registered and many more from around the world including;  Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Greece, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda and the United Arab Emirates…. Phew, George has been busy!

The global interest in Sun Safe Schools is testament to the quality resource provided by the Sun Safe Schools initiative, highlighting the importance of such a scheme to exist and grow. With interest from more than one of these countries to take the scheme national in their country… watch this space folks, we are making waves.

UK's NATIONAL SUN AWARENESS  Week - 8th -14th MAY 2017 & MELANOMA MAY

SKCIN ACTIVITY FOR SUN AWARENESS......

At Skcin, Sun Awareness isn’t just our focus for 1 week of the year, as the UK’s only national charity dedicated to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer - it’s our focus every week of the year. However, as the warmer weather arrives, this week provides a welcomed boost for the awareness of skin cancer prevention, representing the perfect kick-start to boosting participation in our Sun Safe Schools national accreditation scheme.

Developed by Skcin - the Sun Safe Schools National Accreditation Scheme is the UK’s most comprehensive FREE resource, to assist primary schools in; implementing a suitable sun safety policy, communicating with parents to gain support and raise awareness within the wider school community, and educating pupils on the importance of sun safety, to influence behaviour and ultimately, save lives.

The initiative is making a huge impact. With over 2,600 primary and pre-schools registered across the UK including over 100 schools from 18 different countries globally, our comprehensive resources are being used to educate in the region of 400,000 children… and their families.

At Skcin, we have invested a great deal of time and energy into this project as we truly believe this is currently the best resource available to combat over 86% of the UK’s most common cancers and 4 out of 5 melanoma deaths. By educating our future generations to influence behaviour for a positive sun safe future, we can make a huge difference.

UV awareness and skin cancer have always been regarded as a public health issue and not an educational one. The fact is that they are inextricably linked  - the Sun Safe Schools national accreditation scheme bridges the gap between these two governmental departments to provide a service that in the long-term will not only create huge health cost savings, but most importantly save many lives.

With only a short window of opportunity to engage schools to complete their accreditation before the end of the academic year, we are already working with various councils, PHSE co-ordinators and organisations. Armed with our fantastic new website, enhanced resources and a network of dedicated Ambassador’s from around the UK, we are looking forward to welcoming more schools on-board to take advantage of the comprehensive range of FREE resources available.

In addition, during Sun Awareness week and indeed throughout Spring, Summer and all year round, Skcin will continue to produce, promote and distribute our extensive range of prevention and early detection material across the UK. With demand for our material at an all-time high, sending out hundreds of thousands of units nationwide including; booklets, posters, leaflets, mole rulers, children’s activity packs, schools packs, books, games and much more… we have been busy developing and replenishing stocks to fulfill requests.

Our Sun Safe Workplaces national accreditation scheme is also high on the agenda. With the warmer weather arriving and sun safety now recognised as a serious health and safety issue in the workplace, the scheme provides employers of outdoor workers with the UK’s most comprehensive free resource to assist them in developing a suitable sun safety policy and educating their employees on the importance of skin cancer prevention and early detection.

Having, only weeks ago, launched our national Ambassador Network with a 2 day workshop event kindly supported by Bristol-Myers Squibb, Skcin are also delighted to be welcoming more Ambassadors to our expanding team of dedicated supporters and are looking forward to working with our amazing team throughout 2017 and beyond.

WATCH THIS SPACE: Throughout Sun Awareness Week and Melanoma May, Skcin will be sharing prevention and early detection messaging every day across our social media network campaign ‘USE YOUR LOAF!’and will keep you up-to-date with our full line up of activities and events…
