SKCIN LAUNCH HARD-HITTING ‘I SPY’ CAMPAIGN

FOR NATIONAL SUN AWARENESS WEEK

Melanoma is now one of the biggest killing cancers in the 15-34 age group, as cases continue to rise with latest statistics revealing 1 in 54 people will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime - shouldn’t we all know how to spot the early signs and symptoms?

The sooner melanoma is identified and treated, the greater the chance of survival, if caught early enough it’s almost always curable, yet ignorance regarding early detection remains widespread.

To mark the start of National Sun Awareness Week 2018 (14th-20th May), national skin cancer charity, Skcin have launched the ‘I SPY MELANOMA’ campaign that aims to raise awareness of how to spot the early signs of melanoma, promote early treatment, improve prognosis and save lives.

The hard-hitting campaign that shows a skin lesion developing into a melanoma to reveal a skull, may seem harsh, but a necessity when creating a campaign that requires maximum impact to gain attention and a subsequent, vital call to action.

The concept was the brainchild of renowned London photographer Kai Bastard and special effects make-up artist Bill Turpin who collaborated to create the prosthetic melanoma and campaign photography.

Kathryn Clifford, Creative Director at Skcin comments: “It’s been a pleasure to work with Kai and Bill on this creative campaign that we hope will reach and impact a notoriously difficult-to-engage target market. We wanted to create something that would get noticed, provoke intrigue and above all, action!

“Getting the general public engaged into checking their moles isn’t the easiest of tasks - particularly with young adults. That’s why we hope this ‘shocking’ concept will create the impact and action required. Skin cancer is the only cancer we can see and the fact is, it’s a killer, cases are on the rise and urgent action and education on a national scale can and will save lives”.

Skcin have done a great deal already this year, focusing on early detection initiatives, training thousands of professionals across the hair, health and beauty industries which has proved there is still a huge void and thirst for this life-saving knowledge. The I SPY campaign complements the charities concerted efforts in this arena by making this information more accessible to the general public, who we hope will take just 5 minutes of their time to gain and share the kind of knowledge that could just save their life, or that of someone they love.

FRONT LINE FIGHT AGAINST MELANOMA:
SKCIN LAUNCH SPECIALIST MELANOMA EARLY DETECTION TRAINING FOR PODIATRY AND CHIROPODY HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS.
With 1 in 54 people diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime, around 57% of which are likely to occur on the lower leg and foot and an outstanding mis-diagnosis rate of 36% - education and early detection are key to improving prognosis and saving lives.
Developed by Skcin in association with Podiatrist Jane Henderson MChS BSc(PodM),  we are delighted to announce the launch of our Melanoma Early Detection Training Seminars for podiatry and chiropody healthcare professionals.

The bespoke training has been developed to complement the charity’s hugely successful MASCED Accreditation programme for hair, health and beauty industry professionals, which has already been completed by a large number of foot health practitioners. The advanced group training seminars aim to provide healthcare professionals working within the podiatry and chiropody industry with a greater, in-depth knowledge and supportive tools with which to identify the various types of melanoma that occur on the foot and lower limb as well as the confidence and tools to refer patients to take further professional advice.

Jane Henderson, qualified podiatrist and owner of Foot Angels joined the Skcin team as an Ambassador in September 2017 promoting and supporting the charity’s work in raising awareness of the prevention and early detection of skin cancer.
“It amounts to gross negligence!”
That was the reaction when mother and daughter Podiatrists Jane and Emma Henderson discovered their professional course dedicated just a single hour in four years to the detection of melanoma. “When 57% of melanomas appear below the knee, this is shocking.“ comments Jane, “Podiatrists, properly trained could be on the front line in spotting this devastating disease in its early stages. To ignore it is tantamount to manslaughter”.

Jane has good reason to feel so strongly about this and knows all-too-well the seriousness of melanoma. Her own daughter Esther was misdiagnosed at the age of 15. Twenty years of painful operations to combat the cancer show how hard the fight can be.

“Caught early, all this could be avoided” adds Emma, Esther’s elder sister who is keen to take her awareness of melanoma symptoms into her chosen profession.

To help do this, both Jane and Emma have teamed up with Skcin, to deliver the melanoma early detection training to an industry that’s crying out for it.

“Podiatry training as envisaged by Jane and Emma fits perfectly with our mission to combat melanoma” says Marie Tudor, who heads up the charity Skcin.
Six months in the making, their ideas, aided and realised by Skcin are now being reviewed for approval by The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, with the hope it will be awarded certification for professional CPD points in the Summer.” Marie adds.

“Jane has a wealth of experience and knowledge to bring to this much –needed arena, her families plight and resultant passion are a huge asset, not just to our charity, but to a profession and industry both Jane and Emma dedicate their life to and we are proud to support the family in their mission – one that’s completely aligned with ours”.

Jane, Emma and a team of qualified podiatrists will be delivering the training across regional sites from Summer 2018.

SKCIN HITS THE ROAD WITH THE MASCED ROADSHOW THIS MELANOMA MAY!

National skin cancer awareness charity Skcin launched MASCED in January 2018. This FREE online accreditation programme aimed at hair, health and beauty industry professionals has been an unprecedented success for the charity who are renowned for their dedication to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer to save lives.

Over 4,750 people have signed up to receive this ground-breaking Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection (MASCED) training since its launch and success stories of industry professionals spotting the first signs of skin cancer after taking part in the campaign give clear evidence of it’s importance, effectiveness and impact.

In support of ‘Melanoma May’ 2018, Skcin are excited to announce that the MASCED training programme will hitting the road with the MASCED ROADSHOW taking place in 11 locations across the country during the month of May and into June - with more locations planned and dates to be confirmed. From Sunderland to Suffolk, Skcin will be harnessing the power of their Ambassadors and industry tutors to deliver this bespoke training to hundreds of students within hair and beauty colleges across the country.

By working with colleges, who are training young adults to enter these industries, we are able to embed valuable educational messaging to a younger and notoriously difficult-to-engage audience, arming them with the power and knowledge to make a positive impact, not just for their future clients, but their friends, families and crucially themselves.

The MASCED Accreditation programme, not only teaches young adults to spot the early signs of skin cancer and melanoma, but also focuses on the risks of UVR and how to prevent the disease, to influence behaviours, for a positive, sun safe, skin cancer free future.

We are proud to be working with many colleges and salons who are also hosting fundraising events as well as taking part in group training sessions. Look out for events near you or sign up for the MASCED independent online training for free at: www.masced.uk
