Beach & Sun Safety

Scin has teamed up with the Pre-School Learning Alliance, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), and Aardman with Timmy Time to help promote some lifesaving beach and sun safety messages for young children, their families and carers.

Most early years settings are pro-active about sun safety. With skin cancer being the most common and fastest rising cancer in young adults, it is important that children are adequately protected against the sun’s harmful rays and grow up with sufficient knowledge to keep themselves safe.

Likewise, there are some simple lessons that children can learn which will make any trip to the seaside safer. These range from knowing your flags to being able identify the lifeguards and knowing what to do if you become lost.

Top tips for parents

Summer means lots of outdoor play and maybe even the odd trip to the seaside! But before we all rush outside and start having fun, there are dangers that everyone should be aware of, no matter how young or old they are.

• Keep young children in the shade as much as possible - particularly between 11am and 3pm which is the hottest part of the day.
• Slip on a t-shirt to keep shoulders and upper arms covered - if possible wear clothing with UV protection.
• Apply a good quality sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30+ and a 4 - 5 star UVA rating. Reapply generously every couple of hours. Don’t forget the ears, nose, cheeks and tops of feet!
• A legionnaire sun hat is perfect for shading your child’s face, neck and ears.
• Make sure your child has some good quality sunglasses with UV protection.
• If you are going to the seaside, try to choose a lifeguarded beach.
• Lifeguards wear bright red and yellow clothing so they are easy to find. Make sure your child knows where the lifeguards are so if they become lost they will know where to go.
• The red and yellow flags mark the place on the beach that is safest to swim.
• Never let young children go into the sea alone.
• If you see someone in trouble in the water, don’t try to rescue them yourself. Alert a lifeguard or call 999 or 112 and
  ask for the Coastguard.

GB Women's Hockey star Crista Cullen joins Skcin as Patron

Skcin are pleased to announce Crista Cullen as a new patron of the charity.  The GB hockey star, who will also be going for gold at the London 2012 Olympics, has suffered from skin cancer herself and understands the importance of checking the skin, detecting any changes early and also staying safe.

Crista Cullen is a Leicester, England & Great Britain (GB) Womens Hockey star.  Crista has over 150 Great Britain and England combined caps, being honoured with her first GB Cap when she was just 18.  With Commonwealth, World Cup and European cup bronze medals and as Great Britain’s top goal scorer in the Beijing Olympics, Crista is widely recognised as one of the best hockey defenders in the world.

Born in Lincolnshire, Crista spent her early life growing up in Kenya, where her family still live, before moving to Leicestershire at the age of 12 to attend Oakham School.  She went on to study Business Studies at Nottingham Trent University achieving a 2:1 Hons degree.

Crista says... "Being someone who was lucky enough to detect the signs of skin cancer early and coming from a family who have had a number of skin issues through the generations, I fully support skin cancer awareness and education and am happy to become a patron of Skcin.

I was brought up in Africa where the sun is a way of life and being an International Great Britain Hockey player, spending lots of time outdoors, I have had to be very diligent with application of sunscreen to my lower lip, and the rest of my body since my incidence of skin cancer at the age of 18. In Africa we are all too aware of the strength of the sun, however here in the UK I think people are less wary of its strength and the likes of 'sunbeds' are used regularly to detrimental effect. Getting regular full body skin checks is important and I try to visit a specialist at least annually."

Dr Chris Steele hosts Skcin Gala Ball Winners

Mike & Mary Collins were the winning bidders of the ITV Studios tour kindly donated by Dr Chris Steele at the Skcin 2012 Gala Ball.  They took their prize on Tuesday 21st May and had a fantastic time behind the scenes on This Morning, meeting all the cast and mingling in the green room with guests on the show.

Langham Church Of England Primary School Completes Step 2 towards becoming a Sun Safe School - Shade

“Our school is fortunate to have several mature trees in our grounds which provide shade, in particular over the tyre park and astroturf and in the nature garden. We also have a purpose build gazebo large enough to seat an entire class to provide an shaded outside classroom. We also have large parasols which are used in association with picnic tables during fine weather and a number of temporary gazebos which can be put up for special events or in particularly sunny weather to provide additional shade.”

Skcin & The MET Office team up to provide daily UV forecast data

The Met Office provides UV index forecasts on its website (and on Skcin's website) so that everyone can keep up to date with how strong the sun is going to be. These forecasts take account of whether it will be cloudy, or not, when calculating a maximum UV index value for different times during the day.

Skcin took over sponsorship of these UV index forecasts  in April. Skcin is the UK’s only national skin cancer specific charity. Our key aims are raising awareness of the UK’s most common cancer, promoting prevention, early detection and sun safety via Safe Sun initiatives, as well as campaigning for a cultural and educational change.

There is a clear link to weather when it comes to skin cancer and thus a clear link to the work of the Met Office and the UV index forecast. This is why we are proud to be associated with the UV forecast and to promote understanding of the dangers of over exposure to UV and the importance of being aware of UV levels, so people can adequately protect themselves and hopefully prevent skin cancer in the long run.
