Press Release draft January
2016
Skcin have had great
start to 2016 with an announcement that we are to be awarded “Charity of the
Year” by the prestigious St George’s Hill Golf Club in Surrey. The Club is ranked,
variously, 22nd in England, 32nd in the British Isles and
96th in the World. We are delighted to have been selected by their
new Captain and look forward to working with them in 2016.
Richard Welch the new
Captain for 2016 has had long relationship with skin cancer and a family
history of the disease and chose SKCIN as a fitting charity for his term as
Captain. SKCIN is the UK’s only National Skin cancer charity with the key
objectives of raising awareness of skin cancer through education, promoting
prevention and early detection.
The Club expects to
raise a significant amount to assist SKCIN in continuing our work via our
educational programmes SunSafe Schools, www.sunsafeschools.co.uk
and Sunsafe workplaces, www.sunsafeworkplaces.co.uk in
addition to campaigning for change with the government to help tackle the
growing problem of skin cancer.
Richard wrote to
members:
“It is astonishing that skin cancer is the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer with melanoma one of the most common cancers in
young adults (aged 15-34). Most significantly, over 80% of all skin cancers are
caused by over-exposure to the sun and /or sun beds, making the majority of all
skin cancers preventable with sun safety measures.
The particular attraction of
SKCIN is that it concentrates on education and prevention. That has to be the
most effective way to protect future generations from the dangers of
over-exposure to the sun - and sun beds!
I cannot adequately summarise
the scope of the work the charity carries out. I invite you to have a look at
their website, http://www.skcin.org. I guarantee that you will learn something”.
The Club is planning a
Charity Golf Day on 18th March supported by Skcin and our Patron
Gary Wolstenholme MBE who will be playing on the day. The format is a
traditional stableford, four-ball team alliance with an 8.30 am shotgun start. Generous
donators are supporting the event with fabulous prizes and auction lots,
including a hole-in-one car prize!
Money will be raised by
ticket sales, a raffle and silent auction. There will be further activity
planned with the Club later in the year along with the Ladies Captain event.
This support to SKCIN
is truly appreciated and one that is vitally important to us as ultimately all
donations help us continue our work. It would not be possible without the
support of much appreciated donors and supporters.
