“We were delighted to receive our resources. The dispensers are up and the children are very sensible using them They love the song. We have also purchased the legionnaire sun hats now instead of our usual caps. Really pleased that we registered for the scheme - it was at just the right time just before we had the very hot weather. Hopefully now that we have broken up for the summer, the children will remember the messages. Thank you.”

We were lucky to have a parent of a child at our school who is a Skin Cancer nurse andwas able to help us by coming in to school, talking to the children and showing them how to use the sun cream dispensers and apply the sun cream correctly.”

Borrow Wood Primary School Completes Step 1 towards becoming a Sun Safe School - Sun Hats, Sunscreen & Role Models

Congratulations to Borrow Wood Primary School for issuing letters and Sun Safety leaflets to the parents / guardians of all of their children. Borrow Wood Primary School have also pledged to make sure that all children have access to Sun Hats & Sunscreen and that all teachers at the school will be good role models with regard to sun safety.

“Due to the large number of pupil in school it was disappointing the low number of response back from parents. In the end we contacted all parents via our text messaging service asking them to let the office know if they did not want their child using the sun cream.”

“Staff ensure that those children who are allowed to have the sun cream apply this before break time and lunchtime and continually reminding the children to bring and wear their hats whilst outside.”

“Children have been asked to wear broad brimmed sunhats and the sunscreen stations have been positioned round the school. Many parents have chosen to apply the 12-hour protection sunscreen before school each day. Class monitors go round each class before lunch to inform classes if it is a 'slip, slap, slop day.”

“The lessons were well delivered and very well received by the children. In the older classes the children made 3D models of the skin. They then looked at the depth the UVA penetrates and damages. They also completed a range of mathematical activities linked to sun safety In the younger years the children retold the story of George, made posters encouraging sun safety, created cartoons and wrote instructions. The children continue to talk about sun safety each day the sun is shining.”
