Skcin - appoints a new Ambassador for the South West,

Kirsty Sanchez

Skcin are delighted to welcome Kirsty on-board as an Ambassador of the charity. Losing a loved one to cancer, particularly at such a young age and with a young family must be an incredibly difficult journey.  It takes a great deal of passion, dedication and drive to turn that grief into something positive, to want to make a difference and prevent others from suffering the same ordeal. Unbelievably, Kirsty has all this in bucket loads and we couldn’t be more grateful of her support.

As an ambassador of Skcin, Kirsty believes passionately in the charity’s objectives which are to prevent skin cancer through education, to promote early detection and the importance of checking your skin for change. Over 85% of all skin cancer cases are preventable and this is where Skcin feel that the greatest difference can be made to reversing the soaring rates of the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer.

Unfortunately Jonray Sanchez-Iglesias is a startling example that this devastating disease doesn’t discriminate when it comes to age and is now one of the most common cancers in the 15-34 age group. This has to stop, as a nation we have to take action, take sun safety seriously and learn to check our skin regularly.

This is Skcin’s mission and with the help of Ambassadors like Kirsty across the UK, we can make a difference and save lives.

Kirsty has already been raising awareness this Summer with various initiatives as well as fund raising, using the hugely successful restaurant business Jonray and his brother Peter had so passionately built as a platform to reach the local community.

As well as providing free awareness literature to their workforce, extensive clientele and the wider community, Kirsty a mother of two, is committed to working with young children by promoting the charity’s national Sun Safe Schools accreditation scheme. Sun Safe Schools is a free on-line resource for all UK pre-schools and primary schools, providing extensive free teaching resources for children and policy guidance for schools. The annual accreditation scheme is already teaching in excess of 350,000 children in over 2,500 schools across the UK with the objective of preventing skin cancer through education, evoking the required culture change and making a difference for our future generation and those to come.

In addition to raising awareness, Kirsty is passionate about raising funds to help Skcin continue their work. On the 21st July, Kirsty was excited to announce the opening of their latest culinary venture, the Pi Shop pizzeria.  With their open-plan kitchen and wood fired oven, the Pi Shop creates stripped –back ‘Napoli meets Bristol’ sourdough pizzas in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.  We love seeing our UV bracelets take pride of place on the bar in this family friendly restaurant.

A special pizza called the ‘JR Pizza’ has been dedicated to the memory of Jonray and to raising funds to support Skcin with £1 from each sale of the pizza being donated to the charity.  We are delighted to hear it’s already their most popular pizza!

Peter Sanchez-Iglesias commented ‘Mum, Dad and I are so proud of Kirsty and thrilled to support a great charity which we believe will make a real difference.’

Jonray, taken so young at the prime of his life has touched the hearts of so many and we at Skcin are amazed by Kirsty’s bravery, passion and commitment to make a difference so soon after his untimely death. We very much look forward to working with Kirsty in the months and years to come and wish her every success with her new venture.

 Notes:
Information on Sanchez Brothers

In 1999 the Sanchez family made a life changing decision. They quit their day jobs, their home on the other side of Bristol and moved their two young boys to open the doors to Casamia; a trattoria serving pizza and pasta.

Sue and Paco ran the front of house at Casamia with son, Jonray helping out from a young age. When the restaurant’s head chef left, Peter (their youngest son) was thrown in at the deep end, taking over the kitchen and Jonray soon joined him.

With the support of their parents, the Sanchez-Brothers began to transform the former trattoria into something spectacular. Focusing on seasonality and questioning everything, this young, formidable duo were named “two little geniuses” by Gordon Ramsay.

In 2009, the self taught chefs gained a coveted Michelin star and 4AA rosettes followed a few years later. In 2012 Jonray and Peter decided to focus on one set menu at Casamia which, along with the restaurant’s decor, changes once a season. This menu aims to showcase the incredible produce available in that particular season, taking influence from the people they meet and places they’ve visited.

Last year, after celebrating Casamia’s 15th birthday, the family made the exciting decision to move location to central Bristol, to The General Hospital where they will open on Friday 15th January 2016. Working closely with the wonderful team at City and Country Jonray and Peter’s dreams have become a reality.

2016 will see the Sanchez Brothers brand expand with the addition of 2 new restaurants; Pi Shop, offering sourdough pizza and ice-cream and Paco Tapas, an authentic tapas and sherry bar. Watch this space for more information on their new openings.

Pi Shop opened on 21st July 2016.  They are open 7 days a week from 12 noon.

Press Release 18 July 2016

Skcin Welcome Kylie Pentelow as Charity Patron

Skcin are delighted to announce the appointment of ITV’s Kylie Pentelow as a Patron of the charity as she embarks on her mission to help Skcin raise awareness following the death of her beloved father last year to a rare form of skin cancer.

Kylie, whose first job in journalism was as a reporter with The Bath Chronicle and who has also worked for the BBC, is now the co-anchor for ITV News West Country and presents the ITV national news at the weekend.

Today (Monday 18th July) her first programme in a series of documentaries called ‘Under The Skin’ will be aired as part of ITV News West Country on ITV at 6pm.  This forms part of her commitment to raising awareness of skin cancer as she makes a stand against the disease.

In August 2013 Kylie’s father David Pentelow discovered a tiny lump on his lower left arm. Doctors removed the lump and it was sent off to be analysed, within weeks his was told the lump was cancerous.By December Kylie’s family were told the heart-breaking news that the lump was a very rare and aggressive form of skin cancer called Merkel Cell Carcinoma.A precautionary scan some months later revealed it had spread to his lymph glands.

Despite David’s huge positivity throughout his journey, the following 10 months were hard. Swelling, infection, a considerable amount of pain and two types of chemotherapy took it’s toll on David and his family who watched as this proud man and devoted father and husband came to terms with the devastating news that there was nothing more that could be done. When treatment ended, he died just six weeks later aged 68 - two days after Kylie’s birthday, one day after her mum's birthday - his beloved wife of 48 years, Marion.

Kylie said “My dad was my best friend, and I spoke to him every day. He knew everything about my life. The hardest thing was when he was too poorly to speak on the phone. I knew how much I’d miss him before he died. People say about relatives that ‘they miss them every day.’ I miss my dad every hour”.

Now 37-year-old Kylie has become patron of a national skin cancer awareness charity Skcin and is presenting a new series on the condition for ITV, starting Monday 18th July. The series she has made has involved harrowing conversations with other people facing the final stages of cancer treatment.

“ People have said it must be awful to be doing all this, but I had no choice. I am in a lucky position as a journalist and if one person watches my series and thinks ‘I will be careful’ and protects themselves or their children, then that would be amazing.”

Kylie, who has two brothers and a sister, was particularly struck by one statistic: if you get sunburnt as a child, you are 80 per cent more likely to develop skin cancer.

She now wants to go into schools as patron of Skcin to encourage schools to register with the charity’s ‘Sun Safe Schools’ national accreditation scheme and spread the safety message.

“I'm so delighted to be working with Skcin. The charities approach - particularly with the education of children and young people - is key to fighting skin cancer.

When my father died a year ago, I knew I wanted to do something to spread the word of how horrid skin cancer is. So many people in this country are suffering now, and now is the time we need to make a difference. All I can hope for is that one person reads this or hears of the great work of Skcin and starts using sunscreen, or stops using sunbeds."

Kathryn Clifford from the charity was delighted to welcome Kylie as a patron.
“Losing a loved one to cancer is an incredibly painful journey and for some it sparks a genuine desire to make a stand against this devastating disease and prevent others from the same suffering.

Kylie is in a unique position - her journalistic skills and national recognition can really help drive awareness and Skcin are proud to be working with such a dynamic and driven individual who shares our objectives. Her father would of course, be hugely proud of her bravery, effort and passion.”

Kylie’s work has spanned all areas of journalism – from breaking news to celebrity interviews, from studio presenting to live broadcasts. Skcin look forward to working with Kylie to raise awareness, promote the prevention and early detection of skin cancer and help reverse the soaring statistics of this devastating disease.

“It’s very hard to link something like sunbathing which we associate with feeling positive with this terrible illness” says Kylie. “I don’t want people to feel sorry for me, but I hope that if they know why I’m saying these things, I might be able to make a difference.”

You can see more, including a video about Kylie's father at itv.com/westcountry.

A MOTHER who was diagnosed with skin cancer has launched a campaign to warn youngsters of the dangers of the sun’s rays.
Lisa Guthrie, 35, from Consett, County Durham, who used to use a sun bed when she was a teenager, was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and is now in remission.
The mother-of-two, who was made an ambassador by Skcin, the national skin cancer charity, last year, gave a special assembly at St Mary’s Primary School, in Blackhill, where her nine year son, Harley, is a pupil.

Ms Guthrie, who used to visit a tanning salon up to four times a week, said: “Now I absolutely detest sunbeds. It was something I was into when I was younger, but what a lot of people do not understand is if you have even used them when you are a teenager you have damaged your skin. It catches up with you in later life.
“I am putting all of my efforts into raising awareness and the start of summer is a good time to do that.
“People need to know about looking after their skin at an early age.”
As part of the Sun Safe Schools Campaign for the North-East, Ms Guthrie will be visiting other schools in the region so they can earn the charity’s Sun Safe schools accreditation.
Ms Guthrie said: “The sun safe schools accreditation is so important to educate our kids.
“With 80 per cent of skin cancers are caused by over exposure to UV so in effect is very preventable, if we educate from a young age we can help save lives and this achieves cultural change that we all need to be safe in the sun.
“One blistering sunburn in childhood can double chances of skin cancer later in life.
“Children spend almost half their childhood at schools and with 8hrs a week spent outdoors, children are an “at risk” group.
“Schools and the parents have a duty of care to ensure our children are protected during the school day.”
The first ten primary schools in the North East to complete their Sun Safe Accreditation and send in a ‘Sun Safe Superstars Video’ about the scheme and what they have learned will win a Sun Station with mirror, UV dial, Sunscreen dispenser, quality SPF 30 Sunscreen, plus a George the Sun Safe Superstar Board Game.

British Sun Awareness Week – what Skcin are doing in 2016.

Sun Awareness Week is the British Association of Dermatologists' annual campaign to raise awareness of skin cancer and to encourage people to check their skin regularly.

For Skcin this is forms part of our key objective, however we do this everyday of the year -providing a key source of information, free resources and support to the public and health care professionals across the UK.

Skcin's primary objectives are to:

  • Raise awareness of skin cancer through education, promoting prevention and early detection.
  • To engage higher risk target groups via bespoke educational initiatives.
  • To ensure the continued development, longevity and participation in our national accreditation schemes.
  • To campaign for change, make a difference and save lives.

Skcin are dedicated to developing our comprehensive resources and spreading the sun safety message, distributing literature and running campaigns with our partners and working closely with recognised “at risk” groups. Skcin have created and developed three successful national educational, accreditation schemes, as well as various campaigns, partnerships and initiatives to deliver our message as far and wide as we can throughout Sun Awareness Week and beyond.

Over 80% of skin cancers are caused by over exposure to UV, put simply this means over 80% of cases are preventable. Knowledge is power and with skin cancer statistics so compelling, it's time to make a change.

Skcin have always firmly believed that education is key and that a culture change is required to tackle the ever-growing number of skin cancer cases. We also believe the education of young children is where can evoke the greatest change that will impact our future generations and those to come.

To assist us with our objectives Skcin have successfully created and continue to develop three, free, national on-line accreditation schemes, with comprehensive free resources and policy guidance:-

  • Sunsafeschools.co.uk – The first and only accreditation scheme of it’s kind which is dedicated to educating our future generations on the importance of sun safety whilst assisting schools with practical policy guidance.
  • Sunsafenurseries.co.uk – our Sun Safe Schools sister scheme for nurseries and pre-school settings developed to introduce sun safety education to younger children and provide suitable policy guidance.
  • Sunsafeworkplaces.co.uk - our national accreditation scheme for employers of outdoor workers – promoting sun safety and education in the workplace alongside in-depth policy guidance.

Over 2,200 schools and pre-schools have registered with The Sun Safe Schools scheme from all across the UK and overseas, with many British schools abroad also working toward their accreditation.

Skcin are proud to be working with partners in various parts of the UK to expand this work with committed ambassadors and fundraisers.

As such, Sun Awareness Week seems a fitting time to announce the timely recruitment of Skcin Ambassador Lisa Guthrie. The 33 year old mum, local celebrity, chat show host, beauty blogger and internet sensation from Tyne & Wear, has been thrust into the national media spotlight following her personal battle with melanoma. Lisa will be working and filming with Skcin in the North-East to promote our Sun Safe Schools initiative and to work with us in spreading the Sun Safe message across the region.

Skcin commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Lisa as our Ambassador in the North East. Lisa is an incredible woman with an amazing story – this combined with her own success, evident likeability and passion to make a difference - Lisa possesses a huge platform from which she has the ability to make a real difference. We look forward to seeing how we can develop our combined efforts to raise awareness and save lives”.

Skcin have been especially busy for the last two months in the run up to Sun Awareness Week supplying hospitals, doctors, nurses, public health, council partnerships, community health, primary schools, pre-school settings and businesses with our resources and guidance across the UK - helping them spread the word and support us in our mission. Many major hospitals have worked in partnership with us to deliver our information and promotional material to raise awareness locally during Sun Awareness with public skin clinics and handing out our literature.

Our Sun Safety and Skin cancer pocket sized booklets are proving hugely successful. For a small and handy resource it is packed with essential information and facts about UV, Our Skin, Tanning, Sunbeds, Sun Safety Advice, How to Check your Skin and What to Look Out For. They are produced and distributed either for free or via donations across the UK with an estimated 1.5 million copies supplied annually and this figure growing year on year . Our children’s illustrated book, George the Sun Safe Superstar has seen over 2000 books published and given to schools.

Skcin will also be busy during Sun Awareness Week across Derbyshire following the massive success of the Colin Bloomfield Melanoma Appeal with BBC Radio Derby. The Appeal which continues to be facilitated by Skcin has seen 200 local primary schools 50,000 children educated about Sun Safety via Skcin’s Sun Safe Schools Accreditation Scheme in addition to receiving enhanced resources funded by the appeal such as sunscreen and dispensers for every CLASS, UV monitors for the playground and educational games for every school. The appeal has also funded a number of Mole Check Clinics - screening hundreds of people, sun shade structures for local parks and soon to be installed - the nations first solar powered Sun Meter! Our support further continues in Derbyshire during Sun Awareness Week with local Derbyshire hospitals running sun awareness events and includes a Graduate Recruitment event with Derbyshire MP, Pauline Latham at Derby University.

Our crusade continues long after Sun Awareness Week ends with lots of exciting plans with more targeted marketing campaigns with our Ambassadors to schools a new awareness initiative to beauty industry. To Skcin, Sun Awareness Week is not about one week, but everyday encouraging a cultural change and educating so we can prevent this terrible disease and help saves lives.
