Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre

awards Skcin Charity of the Year.

Skcin are delighted to announce that Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre for the 2018/2019 academic year have awarded Skcin Charity of the Year.

Skcin are the UKs only charity dedicated solely to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer and melanoma. Pioneers in educational intervention programmes in schools, workplaces and across the hair, health and beauty industries, Skcins objectives are to raise awareness of skin cancer by promoting prevention and early detection to save lives.

The facts relating to skin cancer cases are incredibly compelling with the disease rising faster then any other cancer. Melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease is now one of the most common cancers in young adults (aged 15-34) and latest statistics reveal 1 in 54 people in the UK will be diagnosed during their lifetime.

Unfortunately skin cancer is caused by the one thing we all enjoy and cannot avoid - yet its almost entirely preventable. With around 86% of all cases due to over exposure to UV, education is crucial in driving a cultural shift in attitudes to prevent the disease, mitigate future healthcare costs and ultimately save lives.

To combat the soaring rates, Skcin have developed various educational accreditations schemes working with key risk groups and influential sectors on a national scale.

Children are particularly at risk due the amount of time they spend outdoors meaning a great deal of their lifetime sun exposure is acquired during their childhood. Burning as a child can cause irreparable damage that can significantly increase their risk of developing the disease in later life. Children who are not protected during school hours, especially during lunch breaks when UV penetration is strongest are at greater risk.

As such, Skcin developed the national Sun Safe Schools Accreditation programme providing comprehensive free resources to help primary and pre-schools fulfil their duty of care to; implement a suitable sun safety policy, communicate with parents and the wider school community to gain support, and educate children on the importance of sun safety, to influence behaviour, for a positive, sun safe, skin cancer free future.

With almost 4,000 primary and pre-schools now registered with the programme, reaching over half a million children and families nationwide, the scheme continues to deliver huge impact across a vital age group.

In addition, Skcin are investigating ways in which to reinforce key messaging to a notoriously difficult-to-engage age group via secondary education and will be working with Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre & Sixth Form Centre to pilot their secondary schools programme for 11- 16yr olds. Skcin will be working with the school on several exciting and pioneering initiatives to deliver sun safety education, helping equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to influence behaviours and prevent this terrible disease in addition to raising awareness of the early signs and symptoms, teaching them how to take charge of their own skin health and surveillance.

Marie Tudor, National Business Development Manager at Skcin said, We are honoured that Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre & Sixth Form Centre has chosen Skcin as its charity of the year. We work tirelessly with schools on nationwide basis to deliver our message and fulfil demand. The charity funds all the accreditations which includes extensive free resources that are delivered annually to schools as well as the comprehensive online platform for the schools to access for full support in achieving their accreditation. As the charity relies solely on donations we are extremely grateful to Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre and the support and commitment they have demonstrated to our work.

Principal of Homewood School & Sixth Form Centre & Sixth Form Centre, Mrs Sally Lees, expressed her support for the work of the charity. Raising awareness of the importance of sun safety for our young people is really important and we are looking forward to working in partnership with Skcin to develop their secondary school programme.

Story FMR ( Funding Melanoma Research) supporting Skcin

Skcin are delighted to announce that Story FMR (Funding Melanoma Research) are supporting our MASCED Accreditation Programme.
The Melanoma charity was set up 2017 and established with a two-fold aim – Prevention and Cure. Run by a team of dedicated volunteers the charity’s key objectives are to promote and preserve the health of the general public by raising awareness of all areas relating to skin cancer including its risks, prevention and treatment, as well as supporting research into skin cancers including melanoma, its treatment and cure and to publish the useful results of such research.
Story FMR has experienced amazing success with its first year of fundraising activities and in recognition of the valuable work Skcin are achieving in the field of awareness and prevention are kindly supporting Skcin to ensure the MASCED programme continues to grow, thrive and ultimately save lives.
Pam Walls commented:  “I firmly believe that this highlights the importance of like-minded charities working together to achieve a common goal.  The programme, with its aim of ‘training eyes to save lives’ is completely aligned with Story FMR’s objective to raise awareness and we are delighted and proud to be able to help Skcin in this way.”
The MASCED Accreditation programme was designed and developed by Skcin earlier this year to train hair, health and beauty industry professionals in skin surveillance and the detection of suspicious legions. The objective of the accreditation is to raise awarness of the early signs and symptoms of the most common and fastest rising cancer and promote early detection of melanoma, to improve prognosis and saves lives.
In addition the programme raises awareness of the importance of Sun Safety to aid the prevention of around 86% of melanoma and the majority of all skin cancer cases. This supports the call by public health figures for a wider perspective on who is most effective to help improve the nation’s health and address concerns raised in the Government’s 2020 Skin Cancer Vision.
The programme has been a phenomenal success with over 7,000 registered professionals trained or in-training, within our first 8 months and 98% of users providing us with 5 star reviews. The Accreditation has been approved by dermatologists is now endorsed by professional bodies BABTAC (British Association of Beauty Therapists and Cosmetology) and HABIA (Hair & Beauty Industry Authority) and awarded CPD points.
The training has also received the attention of the medical world with a comprehensive article soon to be featured in the Dermatological Nursing Journal, highlighting the programme’s success and accolades from the nursing community.
The uptake in registrations is still growing and whilst the charity continues to work tirelessly to deliver and maintain the service to its users, we are truly grateful for the support provided by Story FMR.

Marie Tudor, of Skcin said, “The MASCED training has been an overwhelming success, far exceeding our expectations. We are delighted how we have been able to harness the power of industry professionals via a targeted audience to help deliver our educational training, spreading the message across many industry sectors and filter this out to a wide public audience.
The support of Story FMR is key to its ongoing success and development. Our objectives are aligned in relation to awareness and education and their sponsorship makes perfect sense. Story FMR are a new charity with the same values and ethos as Skcin and their commitment and dedication are evident by their growth and success with fundraising in such a short space if time.
Skcin would like to thank Story FMR for their support and we hope to work further together to grow this relationship, educate our nation and save lives”.

LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR FREE!

As of Wednesday 19th September 2018, we will be introducing a nominal fee of £20 for taking part in the MASCED Accreditation programme.

The reason for introducing the fee, following our 8 month free promotional period is to help Skcin maintain and deliver the training programme and associated resources nationally which has seen phenomenal success since its launch in January this year.

As a charity, we rely solely on donations to support our valuable work and due to the overwhelming uptake in this pioneering training, we need to ensure that we can continue to fulfil, promote, maintain and develop this service to the estimated 250,000 professionals working across the hair, health and beauty industries.

In addition, the MASCED programme from this date, will become an annual accreditation. This means that certification will be valid for a period of one year at which point it can then be renewed by re-taking the accreditation e-course. The reason for this is due to the need for participants to periodically refresh their knowledge and observational skills regarding the detection of suspicious lesions and reinforce key awareness education regarding the prevention of skin cancer and melanoma. The annual cost to renew the MASCED Accreditation will be just £10.

Those that have registered prior to this date will remain free, however will be notified and given the opportunity to renew their accreditation for the nominal renewal fee, should any advancements be implemented or additional CPD points be awarded.

Congratulations to Vale Primary School for completing their Sun Safe Accreditation!

Skcin are pleased to announce that Vale Primary School is now a Sun Safe School.

“Thank you lesson plans, resources, whole school assemblies, video and pdf printables were all easy to use. The policy was easy to read and understood by staff, parents and pupils. We aim to continue teaching sun safety added to local policy on the importance of staying hydrated. Guernsey has a higher rate of people suffering from sun damaged skin so it is very important to us. We also aim to make remaining sun safe high on our whole school agenda and aim to ensure that more sun shade is part of our development of outside areas. Thank you Guernsey Schools.

Skcin are pleased to announce that St Bernard’s First School is now a Sun Safe School.

“I will be able to provide photos once they have gone through the press office as we plan to invite the press to our project based learning presentation on 20th june. The resources were fantastic and it meant that the teachers were more than ready to take on the initiative because so much thought and planning had already gone into them. The story was great.
